Production methods

Two growing techniques that guarantee quality and sustainability

Healthy fruit is an important foundation of healthy nutrition. Therefore, we see it as a commandment of the consumer protection that our apples are grown exclusively in integrated or organic orchards. These two cultivation methods are subject to rigorous checks. We get top marks in both. For your nutrition, for your flavour experience and for your health.

Integrated Production (IP)

IP is a guideline for growing fruit and vegetables, a production method. According to the “Working group for integrated fruit production in South Tyrol”, it is an “agricultural production system for foods which uses all techniques, means of production and pesticides in such a way as to rationalise fertilization and reduce the application of synthetic chemicals to a minimum while observing ecological, toxicological and economic principles”.
IP is a conviction, a clear commitment of our fruit growers to salubriousness, preservation of the environment and sustainability. The South Tyrolean apple production has been based on these values for quite a long time now, since a group of South Tyrolean apple growers started with this environment-friendly production method in 1989 and did pioneer work in this field. By now, IP has become standard practice in our production.
What does a farmer who decides to take up IP do? He tries to maintain a natural balance in his orchards by sparing the natural antagonists of pests and intervening only if indispensable in order to protect the plants and crops. He preserves the health and fertility of the soil. IP is subject to strict controls, which are a guarantee for healthy and high-quality apples. For further information, please go to www.agrios.it

Organic cultivation

Food scandals, allergies, increasing awareness of health issues – nowadays the environment is a highly emotive topic for consumers. No wonder then that demand for organically produced foodstuffs rises from year to year. The 200 fruit growers of Biosüdtirol have traditionally shunned chemically synthetic fertilizers and insecticides. Instead, they use the full force of nature through organic fruit cultivation techniques. Their main objective here is to protect and maintain an ecological balance in the fruit orchards. This balance is the basic prerequisite for the outstanding product quality for which fruit from South Tyrol - Südtirol is so renowned.
In order to maintain this quality over the long term, organic fruit cultivation must also comply with strict directives, for example, Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007; or our own, even more restrictive association regulations. Compliance with these directives and regulations is guaranteed through state regulatory bodies as well as by independent control bodies accredited by IFOAM. This is the only way in which we can permanently obtain top marks for high-quality goods produced using purely organic techniques.
